کتاب بین دیوانه و رودخانه

Written with humor, tenderness, grit, and wonderment by acclaimed playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, Between Riverside and Crazy is an extraordinary new play: a dark comedy about a man trying to maintain control as the world unravels around him. Walter Pops Washington is a retired New York City policeman. His wife has died and his son, Junior, has just been released from jail. They live in a rent-controlled apartment on Riverside Drive in New York City. Walter has been pursuing a discrimination suit against the Police Department, because he was accidentally shot by another police officer. It seems the old days are dead and gone — after a lifetime living between Riverside and Crazy.

I am finishing my year with eclectic finds. Random choices that would have never made my list at the beginning of the year which are as diverse they are enjoyable. The best of these so far has been Between Riverside and Crazy. Im rarely reading plays, but this year I read two: the infamous Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and secondly this: a stirring, funny, jarring and timely tale about race, senility, rage, fear, aging and freedom. I laughed out loud more than once and found myself having to pause to digest the simple truthfulness of it at others. It did all that a great play should do.

A worthy Pulitzer Prize winning play about a retired policeman (on disability from bullets he took during a shootout). Living with him is his son, the sons girlfriend and the sons best friend all of whom call him pops. Pops has a long term suit against the city because he feels like he has been shorted on his disability payments. Throw in two police representatives who are romantically linked and a church lady with unusual ideas about how to make pops morale improve. There you have the elements of this topsy turvy wonderful play.

I was kind of surprised by the arc of this thing. By about scene three, it seemed like a not especially interesting stop on the road from ONeill through Shepard and Letts, but just when I was ready to loose interest, Church Lady turns up. Im not sure there are enough fresh bits to make up for the stale ones, but if a production turned up locally, Id probably go see it.

Funny, well-crafted, reasonably politically and culturally astute. Guirgis has a great sense of the NYC vernaculars and theres just enough complexity in the handling of race and politics to earn the play a place in the conversations around Black Lives Matter.

Powerful story!

Looking forward to seeing the performance in a few weeks. I couldnt stop reading. Just when I thought I understood what was happening I realized that I was wrong. Will lead to some great discussions.
